BloodLAnd is the true story of the birth of Los Angeles driven by one man and one woman’s quest for the soul of America – the dream of a fair, free, revolutionary, and classless society.
Emil Harris is an impoverished Jewish immigrant, who flees brutal racial oppression in Germany, only to find that his new home may be even worse than his old one. Emil’s is the archetypal migrant’s journey, the universal theme of dreams and ideals meeting the bitter-sweet reality of the ruthless streets.
Miriam Greene is the daughter of a wealthy Jewish family in Los Angeles, a woman of fierce intellect who has forsaken marriage and children in order to make her way in the world of men. A brilliant attorney of law and a political campaigner, yet unable to practice law in America in the 1870s, Miriam teams up with Emil as a way of asserting herself.
Together, they are on a mission to bring order and justice to the raw violence of Los Angeles.
Impelled by the myth of a classless and free America, Emil joins the fledging 6-man LAPD, which is saturated with graft and bribery. Little does he know how deep this river runs!
Our series unfolds through the eyes of Emil and Miriam, who initially meet at the Sheriff’s Office, where she works as a clerical assistant. Theirs is a partnership of love, endeavour, commitment and passionate debate, usually with love finishing in a close second place – for our protagonists are true individualists with a strong sense of what must be done at any cost.
In BloodLAnd we witness every human emotion: hope, despair, cruel lynchings, lust, betrayal, love and murder, all of which culminate on October 24, 1871 in the largest mass lynching in American history. 19 Chinese are left dead. Hanged & mutilated by a mob of 500 Angelenos. 10 percent of LA’s Chinatown have been murdered.
Our concept is based upon the uneven universe that is Los Angeles: a pressure-cooker of xenophobia that leads to the ferocious massacre, the national scandal that follows, the court case… and of course, the inevitable cover-up, orchestrated by the Los Angeles City authorities.
Throughout, Emil and Miriam do all that they can to stave off the tsunami of commonplace violence. Their passion for justice & liberty is challenged to the core; but never diminished.
Etched into the lining of his ill-fitting uniform and her silk dress: America in its true sense must prevail!
This modern Western will closely relate to a global audience, because in essence the problems of 1871 are still relevant & unresolved. Audiences will be fascinated by this socio-political drama, whose focus is absolutely modern and relevant to their lives today… with the inevitable, profound conclusion that very little has changed in America since the end of the Civil War.
